Die 58. Ausgabe des steirischen herbst besinnt sich der antifaschistischen Wurzeln des Festivals. Ihr Ausgangspunkt ist das satirische Theaterstück Nie wieder Friede (1934–36) des deutsch-jüdischen Schriftstellers Ernst Toller.
In Ernst Tollers Nie wieder Friede trifft Napoleon auf Franz von Assisi. Nástio Mosquito stellt sich in seinem Animationsfilm viele weitere Begegnungen dieser Art vor. Johannes Paul II. und Madonna, Shaka und Voltaire – die ebenso unerhörten wie hochkarätigen Paare besuchen ein Konzert von WAMBATA EXPRESS, einer All-Star-Band mit Musiker:innen wie Miles Davis, Nina Simone oder dem Künstler selbst. Sie alle werden in den Schatten gestellt von „Wesen des Monats“, widersprüchlichen ideologischen (Ur-)Großmüttern unserer Zeit. Mosquito reflektiert damit den aktuellen Kult um Persönlichkeiten und den sogenannten Zusammenprall der Zivilisationen.

The 58th edition of steirischer herbst returns to the festival’s antifascist roots. Its starting point is the satirical play Nie wieder Friede (1934–36) by the German-Jewish writer Ernst Toller.
In Ernst Toller’s Nie wieder Friede, Napoleon meets Francis of Assisi. In his new animated film, Nástio Mosquito imagines other such exceptional encounters. John Paul II and Madonna, Shaka and Voltaire—these outrageous and unlikely pairs are attending a concert by WAMBATA EXPRESS, a supergroup including Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Tony Allen, Phil Collins, as well as the artist himself. They are all overshadowed by “beings of the month,” contradictory ideological (great)grandmothers of our time. Mosquito thus comments on the current clashes and cults of personality and so-called civilization.
