Anlässlich zweier internationaler Präsentationen der französisch-österreichischen Künstlerin Gisèle Vienne, die von Phileas koproduziert wurden, zeigen sie diesen Herbst eine Auswahl ihres künstlerischen Werks in Wien. Die Ausstellung folgt auf ihre Solopräsentation 2024 im Haus am Waldsee in Berlin, kuratiert von Anna Gritz, sowie auf ihre Teilnahme an der diesjährigen Ausgabe von SITE Santa Fe International in New Mexico, USA.
Viennes vielseitige Praxis als Künstlerin, Choreographin und Regisseurin umfasst Bildhauerei, Film, Fotografie und Theater, die in einem engen Zusammenspiel stehen. Die Ausstellung bei Phileas beleuchtet erstmals in Österreich Viennes bildnerische und fotografische Facetten und präsentiert ihre lebensgroßen Puppen, die in ihrer eindringlichen physischen wie psychischen Präsenz zentrale Träger ihrer künstlerischen Praxis sind.
Gisèle Vienne wurde seit ihrer Kindheit von Dorothéa Vienne-Pollak in der bildenden Kunst ausgebildet. Sie studierte Tanz und Musik, später Philosophie und Puppenspiel. In den vergangenen zwanzig Jahren waren ihre Arbeiten in Europa, Asien und Amerika auf Tournee. Zu ihren Produktionen und Filmen zählen Showroomdummies (2001 - 2020), I Apologize (2004), Kindertotenlieder (2007), Jerk (2008), This Is How You Will Disappear (2010), LAST SPRING: A Prequel (2011), The Ventriloquists Convention (2015) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Puppentheater Halle, Crowd (2017), L'Étang (2021), und EXTRA LIFE (2023).
Vienne zeigte ihre Arbeiten in renommierten Museen, darunter das Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, das Centre Pompidou in Paris, das Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, das Centre d’Art Contemporain in Genf sowie das Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. 2024/2025 präsentierte sie zeitgleich zwei Ausstellungen im Haus am Waldsee und im Georg Kolbe Museum in Berlin.

This autumn, Phileas presents a selection of works by Franco-Austrian artist Gisèle Vienne on the occasion of two recent international projects co-produced by Phileas. The exhibition is based on her 2024 solo presentation at Haus am Waldsee in Berlin, curated by Anna Gritz, and her participation in this year‘s edition of SITE Santa Fe International in New Mexico, USA, curated by Cecilia Alemani.
Vienne’s multifaceted practice as an artist, choreographer, and director spans sculpture, film, photography, and theatre, which are closely interwoven throughout her work. The exhibition at Phileas marks the first presentation of her sculptural and photographic practice in Austria, featuring her life-sized dolls whose, unsettling physical and psychological presence plays a central role in Vienne’s artistic expression.
From an early age, Gisèle Vienne was trained in visual arts by Dorothéa Vienne-Pollak, studied dance, and music, and later philosophy, and puppeteering.
