Einem wiederkehrenden Motiv in Tolia Astakhishvilis Werk folgend, nimmt die erste museale Einzelausstellung der Künstlerin die „Figur des Kindes“ als Ausgangspunkt. In diesem Kontext steht das Kind für ein Wesen von großer geistiger und gestalterischer Autonomie, das zugleich stark auf andere Menschen angewiesen ist. Dieses Konzept fungiert als Übung in Vorstellungskraft, die das Potenzial und die Grenzen von Empathie auslotet – ausgehend von der gemeinsamen Erfahrung, dass wir alle einst selbst Kinder waren. In Bezug auf räumliche Umgebung, Maßstab und Prekarität verkörpert die Figur des Kindes einen Seinszustand, in dem Unsichtbarkeit oft mit voller Härte erfahren wird. Entsprechend richtet Tolia Astakhishvili in der Ausstellung ihr Augenmerk auf das Erlebnis von Kunst selbst, das sich über Bewegung und Berührung entfaltet und sich bewusst von den Konventionen musealer Präsentation löst. Der Gedanke der „ersten Begegnung“, wie Kinder ihn in der erstmaligen Erfahrung eines Phänomens erleben, bildet dabei den Schlüssel zu einer neuen Art des Erlebens.
Tolia Astakhishvili (* 1974, Tiflis, Georgien) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Tiflis. Zu ihren jüngsten Einzelausstellungen zählen to love and devour in der Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation Venedig (2025), between father and mother im SculptureCenter, New York (2024), The First Finger (chapter II) im Haus am Waldsee, Berlin (2023) sowie The First Finger im Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn (2023). Ihre Arbeiten waren in zahlreichen Gruppenausstellungen zu sehen, zuletzt im MoMA PS1, New York (2025), in der Fondation Pernod Ricard, Paris (2025) und im Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Roma, Rom (2024).

In keeping with a recurring motif in the work of artist Tolia Astakhishvili, the artist’s first solo museum exhibition will proceed from the concept of the “figure of the child.” In this context, the child embodies both a high degree of intellectual and creative autonomy and a profound dependence on others. This concept becomes an exercise in imagination, exploring the possibilities and limits of empathy, grounded in the fact that we were all children once. In relation to spatial environments, scale, and precariousness, the child represents a state of being in which invisibility is often experienced with great immediacy and intensity. Accordingly, Tolia Astakhishvili focuses on the experience of art itself, extending it to movement and touch and breaking with the conventions of museum presentation. The notion of the “first encounter,” as children experience it when initially perceiving a phenomenon, serves here as a key to a new kind of experience.
Tolia Astakhishvili (born 1974 in Tbilisi, Georgia) lives and works in Berlin and Tbilisi.
