Director General Fatima Hellberg continues to advance the museum’s ongoing process of opening up, a commitment she has pursued consistently since taking up her position in October 2025. On Level -3, the mumok Atelier and, from November onwards, the mumok Salon establish new spaces that respond to visitors’ needs while reimagining the museum experience.
mumok Atelier – Sensing Rather Than Explaining
Located on the museum’s third basement level, the new mumok Atelier has been conceived as a space for creative exploration. Viennese architect Christa Stürzlinger has designed the studio using high-quality materials and tools. Visitors are invited to experiment with clay and loam, plaster, sand, charcoal and chalk, wire, string, wool and felt, cardboard and paper, as well as found objects made of wood and metal.
During the day, the Atelier primarily offers children a space for hands-on exploration and creative expression. In the evenings, it also opens up to adults, hosting analogue formats centred on making, craftsmanship and material-based practices. From Tuesday to Friday, the Atelier is freely accessible without prior registration, while weekends are reserved for bookable workshop sessions.
Introducing a New Companion: The mumok Mole
Visitors to the mumok Atelier will encounter a permanent resident who prefers to explore the world through touch rather than sight: the mumok Mole. Created by Bulgarian-born, Vienna-based artist Sevda Chkoutova, the mole is more than a mascot. It is an adaptable and versatile play companion, inviting children to engage with it and providing an imaginative partner for their many ideas.
A wall installation on Level -3 tells the story of how the mole found its way to mumok and how it has continued to transform along the way. A wall drawing, created by Chkoutova directly on site, extends into a series of display cases featuring peepholes and a variety of materials. The corridor leads directly into the Atelier, becoming an introduction to this new world within the museum.
