Thema der Ausstellung ist Kleidung und Mode als essentieller Bestandteil von Kunst, der besonders seit Mitte der 1960er-Jahre für bedeutende KünstlerInnen wie Ellsworth Kelly, Cindy Sherman, Niki de Saint Phalle oder Daniel Buren eine Rolle spielt. Immer schon hat die Mode einen entscheidenden Anteil an der Semantik der Moderne, deren Paradigmen sich seit Baudelaires „modernité“ an Konzepten der „mode“ orientieren. Im frühen 20. Jahrhundert wird die Mode bei den Futuristen oder bei Sonia Delaunay, aber auch im Surrealismus zur Sprache der Avantgarden.

The exhibition focuses on clothing and fashion as an essential component of art, where particularly since the mid-1960s they have played a major role in the work of such artists as Ellsworth Kelly, Cindy Sherman, Niki de Saint Phalle and Daniel Buren. Fashion has always played an important role in the semantics of modernism, with numerous traditions following Baudelaire in defining “modernité” through a concept of fashion – of what is “à la mode”.
